Former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio faces sentencing for Jan. 6 seditious conspiracy.
Former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio is facing sentencing for his involvement in a seditious conspiracy to disrupt the certification of the 2020 presidential election on January 6, 2021.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) is seeking a lengthy 33-year prison sentence for Tarrio, a punishment that could potentially surpass the sentences of other individuals charged in connection with the Capitol riot, which was comprised of supporters of former President Donald Trump.
Tarrio’s sentencing hearing is scheduled to take place in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C. at 2 p.m. ET. Notably, Judge Timothy Kelly recently handed down sentences lower than what prosecutors had requested for some of Tarrio’s co-defendants, three of whom were also convicted of seditious conspiracy.

However, these co-defendants did not escape significant punishment. For instance, Ethan Nordean, who led the Seattle chapter of the Proud Boys, received an 18-year prison sentence.
This sentence matched the longest sentence thus far for any individual related to the events of January 6, tying with Stewart Rhodes, the founder of the Oath Keepers. On the same day, Dominic Pezzola, another defendant, received a 10-year sentence. As Pezzola left the courtroom after his hearing, he reportedly raised his fist and shouted, “Trump won!”
Two other Proud Boys leaders received sentences the day before. Far-right commentator Joseph Biggs was sentenced to 17 years in prison, while Zachary Rehl, the president of the Proud Boys’ Philadelphia chapter, received a 15-year sentence.
The DOJ had initially sought varying sentences for these individuals, including 27 years for Nordean, 33 years for Biggs, 30 years for Rehl, and 20 years for Pezzola. It’s worth noting that Pezzola was the only defendant among the five mentioned who was not found guilty of seditious conspiracy.
Charles Donohoe, another defendant in the Proud Boys case, pleaded guilty in April 2022 to charges of conspiracy and assaulting officers.

The DOJ has brought charges against more than 1,100 defendants related to the events of January 6 at the U.S. Capitol. Tarrio and his co-defendants were deemed to have played a “central role” in orchestrating the unlawful events of that day, as stated by Attorney General Merrick Garland following their convictions in May.
These defendants were found guilty of directing a large group of Proud Boys and other pro-Trump rioters to breach the Capitol grounds on January 6. On that day, Congress had convened to officially confirm President Joe Biden’s victory over Donald Trump in the 2020 election.
Donald Trump, who had falsely claimed that he had defeated Biden, spent the post-election period challenging the election results and promoting unfounded conspiracy theories related to widespread election fraud.
At a rally in Washington, D.C., on the morning of January 6, Trump urged a crowd of his supporters to march to the Capitol and “fight like hell” to pressure Republican congressmen and then-Vice President Mike Pence to reject the electoral votes.
Notably, the former president, who is currently a top contender for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, is facing charges in two separate cases for his alleged unlawful efforts to overturn the 2020 election. Trump has pleaded not guilty to these charges.
Tarrio and Nordean had initially been scheduled for sentencing the previous Wednesday, but their hearings were postponed due to Judge Timothy Kelly’s sudden illness.

In summary, former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio is facing sentencing for his involvement in a seditious conspiracy related to the January 6 Capitol riot. The DOJ is seeking a 33-year prison sentence for him, exceeding the sentences of other individuals charged with the riot.
Tarrio and his co-defendants played a central role in organizing the events of January 6, during which the U.S. Capitol was breached as Congress was in the process of certifying President Joe Biden’s election victory.
These events were fueled by then-President Donald Trump’s false claims of election fraud and his call to supporters to “fight like hell” to overturn the election results. Trump himself is facing legal challenges for his actions related to the election.
