Indian Rescuers Reach 41 Trapped Men in Tunnel Debris.
In the Himalayas, a daring rescue mission led by Indian rescuers, including the unique expertise of “rat miners,” reached 41 trapped construction workers. Strayed for 17 days following a tunnel collapse, these men were in dire need of rescue in the treacherous conditions.
The intricate operation involved drilling through solid rock and debris to access the trapped individuals. Employing a narrow evacuation pipe just 90 cm wide, rescuers prepared to carefully extract each of the workers hailing from India‘s most impoverished regions.
The process, set to commence imminently, drew gratitude from Uttarakhand state’s chief minister, Pushkar Singh Dhami, who acknowledged the support of both the Hindu deity Baba Baukh Nag Ji and the millions of praying Indians. “Soon, all the labourer brothers will be removed,” he affirmed, hoping for the impending rescue.
Since the collapse on November 12, these men had been sustained with essential supplies—food, water, light, oxygen, and medicines—via a pipe connection. However, efforts to dig a rescue tunnel using advanced machinery have faced multiple setbacks.
In a remarkable turn, government authorities turned to the expertise of “rat miners,” specialists known for their hazardous yet effective technique in navigating narrow passages, primarily used in coal mining.
These miners, brought in from central India, toiled tirelessly, manually drilling through the debris inside the evacuation pipe after mechanical devices failed.
Their relentless efforts culminated in a breakthrough on Tuesday afternoon as they penetrated through an estimated 60 meters of rock, earth, and metal.
A team of rescue workers swiftly entered the tunnel equipped with ropes, ladders, and stretchers, ready to evacuate the trapped workers. Outside, 41 ambulances stood prepared to transport them to a hospital approximately 30 km away.
The scene was one of mixed emotions—rescue workers exuded relief and triumph, posing for photographs with victory signs. At the same time, relatives of the trapped men eagerly awaited their loved ones’ safe emergence.
The villagers and relatives gathered outside the tunnel, their anticipation palpable. Emotions ran high as they prepared to accompany the workers to the hospital. One father, identified only as Chaudhary, expressed his earnest anticipation for his son’s safe return, encapsulating the collective sentiment of hope and relief.
Meanwhile, nearby onlookers congregated, some singing devotional songs while others chanted praises to the Hindu god Lord Ram upon hearing news of the breakthrough. Their support and prayers echoed the nation’s sentiments during this challenging time.
Throughout their ordeal, the trapped men received sustenance through a lifeline pipe, offering cooked meals including flatbreads, lentils, and vegetable curry.
A team of over a dozen doctors, including psychiatrists, maintained communication through the pipe, monitoring the workers’ health and advising them to engage in light exercises and maintain social interaction within their confined space.
This tunnel collapse unfolded within the context of the Char Dham highway project, a monumental endeavor by Prime Minister Narendra Modi aimed at connecting four Hindu pilgrimage sites via an extensive 890-km road network.
Though the cause of the collapse remains undisclosed, the region’s susceptibility to natural disasters like landslides, earthquakes, and floods underscores the challenges faced during construction.
Critical voices have emerged regarding the Char Dham project, with environmental experts voicing concerns. Some construction activities were paused following subsidence-induced damage to hundreds of houses along the route.
Despite these challenges, the government emphasized employing environmentally sound techniques to enhance safety in geologically unstable areas and mandated an audit of 29 tunnels constructed across India by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
