Modi Announces India’s Bid for 2036 Olympics.
India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has officially declared the nation’s intent to bid for the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games, announced at the opening ceremony of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) session held in Mumbai.
Modi emphasized that hosting the Olympics has long been an aspiration for India and described the nation’s passion for sports.

“Indians are not just sports lovers, but we also live it,” Modi stated. “India will leave no stone unturned in the preparation for the successful organization of the Olympics in 2036 — this is the dream of the 1.4 billion Indians.”
Modi’s address at the IOC session underscored the commitment of India to pursue this Olympic dream, with a promise to secure support from the IOC.
While Modi did not specify a particular city or region for India’s bid, Ahmedabad, home to the world’s largest stadium with a capacity of 132,000, is a potential contender as the primary host city, named after the Indian Prime Minister himself.

India’s ambition to host the 2036 Olympics places it in competition with other countries expressing interest in hosting the event. Indonesia and Mexico have previously conveyed their official interest, and Poland’s President Andrzej Duda recently announced his country’s desire to host the Games. The IOC, however, still needs to establish a definitive timeline for awarding the hosting rights for the 2036 Games.
The 2036 Summer Games represent the next available edition after Paris, set to host in 2024, Los Angeles in 2028, and Brisbane in 2032. Modi also extended India’s potential bid to host the Youth Olympics in 2029, emphasizing the broader significance of sports.

“Sport is not just about winning medals but also winning hearts,” he articulated, echoing the sentiment that sports have the power to unite and inspire beyond just the competitive aspect.
In sum, India’s formal announcement to bid for the 2036 Olympics marks a significant step in the country’s pursuit of a long-held dream and aligns with the broader global trend of countries vying for the opportunity to host this prestigious sporting event.

The outcome of this competitive bid process will depend on numerous factors, including infrastructure, financial capacity, and the backing of the IOC. Regardless of the result, India’s determination to bring the Olympics to its shores reflects the nation’s enthusiasm for sports and its vision of contributing to the international sporting community.
