Roblox Introduces 3D Virtual Goods Sales to Boost Revenue.

Roblox, the popular gaming platform beloved by kids, is taking significant steps to boost its revenue by expanding opportunities for users to create and sell a broader range of digital goods. This move comes as the company seeks to reinvigorate its financial growth after experiencing a slowdown.

Previously, Roblox users could create and sell 2D digital items, primarily virtual clothing, and were required to go through an application and approval process to participate in the company’s user-generated content (UGC) program for 3D assets. However, Roblox has now opened up its marketplace to a wider audience.

Users who subscribe to Roblox’s upper-tier premium plans, which provide a monthly allowance of the platform’s digital currency, Robux, can now sell their 3D digital goods to other users without requiring UGC program approval. This move is expected to encourage more creative contributions to the platform.

Manuel Bronstein, Roblox’s Chief Product Officer, emphasized the significance of this decision, stating, “Now you have the marketplace open to everybody, and you will have the opportunity to have a lot of creation on the platform.

We know that with increased creation comes more engagement and more users.” Roblox, which went public in 2021 with a market capitalization of $38 billion, initially generated excitement among investors due to its unique digital universe where people interact, play games, and participate in a virtual economy.

However, the company’s revenue growth has slowed significantly, dropping to a mere 15% year-over-year in the most recent quarter, a stark contrast to the over 100% growth it experienced at various points in 2021.

The stock took a hit in 2022, plummeting by 72%, and Roblox’s market capitalization has shrunk to approximately $18 billion. Roblox is actively seeking avenues to reinvigorate its financial performance in light of these challenges.

Roblox’s latest announcement coincides with its annual developer conference held in San Francisco. Roblox’s primary revenue source is the sale of Robux, its digital currency.

When users use Robux to purchase virtual items within games, Roblox shares 30% of the revenue with the game developers. The company expanded its business earlier this year by introducing online ads as a new revenue stream.

By allowing Roblox users to create and sell 3D digital goods, the company aims to attract more paid subscribers who are willing to invest in this feature. To upload 3D accessories and clothing to the marketplace, users must pay a fee of 750 Robux.

However, they can submit their custom 3D bodies and heads for digital avatars without any charge. Users can purchase Robux, with 30,000 Robux costing $105.

Additionally, developers who create custom video games on the Roblox platform will gain access to new coding tools designed to enhance user interaction and communication. These tools will enable developers to create interactive experiences, such as digital phone booths that allow users to call their Roblox friends.

This suite of communication-focused services is known as Roblox Connect. Bronstein noted that users would even have the option to make real-life phone calls to their friends and family within the Roblox platform, provided everyone involved has a Roblox account.

In conclusion, Roblox is strategically expanding its platform to allow more users to create and sell 3D digital goods, boosting revenue and reinvigorating growth. This decision aligns with the company’s efforts to remain a leading online gaming and virtual world industry player.

Maximizing Licensing Revenue: The Potential of Officially Licensed Virtual Items on Roblox
Roblox is rolling out several exciting features and tools to empower its developers and enhance the user experience to increase the platform’s revenue and reach. These updates include new coding tools, subscription-based services, a digital assistant, and expanded accessibility to different devices.

One significant development is the introduction of coding tools designed to help developers create subscription-based services within their in-platform games and experiences. Scheduled for release later in the year, these tools will enable developers to generate recurring revenue by offering subscription packages to their most dedicated fans.

The platform will charge developers a 30% fee for these subscriptions.
According to Roblox’s Chief Product Officer, Manuel Bronstein, these subscription tools will allow creators to tailor the benefits of their subscriptions. Developers can set price points for their subscription offerings and start earning a recurring income as users subscribe.

For instance, developers can entice subscribers with exclusive virtual items, such as a new virtual shirt delivered weekly, creating an ongoing incentive for users to subscribe.

Additionally, Roblox is introducing a digital assistant to simplify content creation within the platform’s online universe. This assistant uses a conversational approach similar to artificial intelligence tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Bronstein explained that users can interact with the assistant using natural language, making the content creation process more accessible to a broader audience.

Bronstein further elaborated on the digital assistant’s capabilities, stating that users can input information to the assistant, specifying their creative intentions. For example, a user could request, “I want to create a column that is as high as a human,” and see the result displayed on the screen.

This visual and intuitive process allows for immediate feedback, enabling users to make real-time adjustments. The aim is to streamline and simplify content creation, making it more accessible to users who may not be proficient in traditional coding languages.

Roblox is also expanding its platform’s accessibility by making its app available to users of the Meta Quest virtual reality headset. Initially tested in July, the Roblox app will become accessible to all Meta Quest VR headset users this month.

This move allows VR enthusiasts to immerse themselves in the Roblox universe, offering a new dimension of interactive experiences.
Furthermore, Roblox is extending its reach to Sony PlayStation console users, with plans to make the platform available on these devices starting in October.

This expansion will introduce Roblox to a wider gaming audience, enabling PlayStation users to engage with the platform’s diverse range of games and experiences.

Roblox is taking significant steps to enhance its platform’s offerings and accessibility. Developers will have the tools to create subscription-based services, fostering recurring revenue streams and user engagement.

The introduction of a conversational digital assistant aims to make content creation more intuitive and user-friendly, while expanded accessibility to Meta Quest VR headsets and PlayStation consoles broadens the platform’s user base. These strategic moves are part of Roblox’s ongoing efforts to evolve and thrive in the competitive world of online gaming and virtual experiences.
