SpaceX Starship was intentionally destroyed in space.
SpaceX embarked on its second Starship rocket flight, marking another leap in the colossal vehicle’s development under Elon Musk‘s pioneering company.
It was taking off from the Texas facility at 8 a.m. ET, the Starship soared for over seven minutes, achieving a successful detachment from its booster. However, the flight was intentionally terminated mid-air by the rocket’s onboard system, a move that marked a significant milestone but brought the test to an unexpected end.

Crucially, no individuals were aboard the test flight, ensuring safety as SpaceX ventured into uncharted territory. John Insprucker, SpaceX’s principal integration engineer, expressed that the Automated Flight Termination System on the second stage was initiated late in the burn, leading to the loss of second-stage data.
The Flight Termination System, a standard safety protocol, triggers destruction if deviations or issues arise during flight. The webcast revealed Starship’s detonation at an altitude of approximately 148 kilometres, slightly less than half the altitude of the International Space Station’s orbit.
Despite the premature end to the flight test, SpaceX had ambitious plans for Starship. The original goal involved manoeuvring the craft most of the way around the Earth before re-entering the atmosphere and safely splashing down off the coast of Kauai, Hawaii.

Acknowledging the event’s unexpected turn, SpaceX’s quality engineering manager, Kate Tice, termed it an “incredibly successful day,” highlighting the test’s accomplishments despite the unplanned disassembly of both the Super Heavy booster and the ship.
Following the flight, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced its intention to conduct a thorough investigation, which is standard procedure after a mishap of this nature.
These investigations scrutinize rocket launch failures, particularly involving vehicle destruction, ensuring safety protocols and determining corrective measures. The FAA emphasized that there were no reports of injuries or damage to public property resulting from the incident.

Bill Nelson, NASA Administrator, commended SpaceX for the progress made during the flight test. He viewed the event as an opportunity for learning and emphasized the essence of boldness, innovation, and resilience in the realm of space exploration.
His acknowledgement highlighted the complexities of spaceflight and the importance of continued learning and progress.
Having cleared SpaceX for the second launch earlier in the week, the FAA is expected to oversee the investigation. Regulatory procedures will mandate corrective actions from SpaceX before granting licenses for future Starship launches.
