British Tycoon Set to Launch Electric Airline with Plant-Based Cuisine.
British entrepreneur Dale Vince has unveiled plans to launch Ecojet, an electric airline powered by renewable energy, aiming to revolutionize the aviation industry and its environmental impact.
The ambitious project, scheduled to commence flights in the UK by 2024, aims to set a new standard for sustainable air travel.
Ecojet intends to initially utilize 19- and 70-seat turboprop aircraft, to transition to hydrogen-electric powertrains for increased environmental efficiency. In the short term, while securing routes and necessary licenses from the Civil Aviation Authority, Ecojet will operate conventional fuel-powered planes.
However, the long-term vision includes expanding flight operations to mainland Europe and even long-haul destinations, providing an eco-friendly alternative for travellers.
According to the announcement, Ecojet plans to retrofit its aircraft with hydrogen-electric powertrains as soon as they receive approval from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). This conversion process will commence in 2025, one year after the airline’s initial flights take off.
Notably, Ecojet aims to prioritize sustainability throughout its operations. In addition to utilizing environmentally friendly powertrains, the airline intends to offer plant-based meals onboard, eliminating single-use plastic from its services.
An essential aspect of Ecojet’s eco-friendly approach lies in repurposing existing planes rather than constructing new ones. By retrofitting aircraft with hydrogen-electric powertrains, the airline estimates it will save significant carbon emissions—approximately 90,000 tonnes per year.
Furthermore, the transition to hydrogen-electric power will result in water being the only byproduct that can be captured and released into the lower atmosphere. This process is designed to mitigate the adverse effects of contrails, reducing the airline’s overall environmental impact.
Dale Vince, the founder of British energy firm Ecotricity and the driving force behind Ecojet, expressed strong optimism about the prospects of the electric airline, emphasizing that it represents a significant step towards solving the long-standing challenge of sustainable air travel.
Vince acknowledged that the issue of creating environmentally friendly aviation has been a persistent concern for the green movement over the years.
However, it is important to temper expectations, considering the complex nature of decarbonizing the aviation sector. According to the International Energy Agency, aviation accounted for 2% of the world’s energy-related carbon dioxide emissions in 2022.
While this may seem like a relatively small share, the sector remains one of the most difficult to decarbonize, as highlighted by the Paris-based organization.
The World Wildlife Fund echoes these concerns, describing aviation as one of the fastest-growing sources of greenhouse gas emissions driving global climate change.
It further emphasizes that air travel is currently the most carbon-intensive activity an individual can engage in.
Aviation discussions have increasingly focused on innovative ideas and technologies that could mitigate the sector’s environmental impact in recent years.
The maiden flight of a hydrogen fuel-cell plane capable of carrying passengers in September 2020 and Airbus’s unveiling of three hydrogen-powered concept planes during the same month exemplify the excitement surrounding potential advancements in the field.
However, some industry veterans, such as Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary, adopt a cautious stance when discussing radical shifts in aviation shortly.
O’Leary expressed scepticism about the imminent replacement of carbon-based jet aviation, stating that technologies like hydrogen fuels, sustainable fuels, and electric propulsion systems will likely materialize in 2030.
While the aviation industry recognizes the pressing need for sustainable solutions, it remains a complex and evolving challenge.
